Assaf Harofeh's Shiram Clinic (Integrated Medical Services) is the first such clinic in Israel, perhaps the world, to provide traditional methods integrated with conventional medical treatment. Assaf Harofeh Medical Center provides not only the highest standards of health care but it continuously strives to improve the quality of medical treatment. To attain this goal, AHMC expends considerable effort in strengthening its scientific and developmental components.

In its effort to understand the mechanism of disease, and to develop new improved methods of treating the sick, the advantage of strong collaboration between clinicians and scientists cannot be overstated. Indeed, the emphasis here is placed on close co-operation between basic research, clinical research and clinical trials.

Several laboratories have recently been established at AHMC, where research efforts focus on understanding the malfunction of molecular mechanisms that regulate the response of bodily systems to disease and trauma. Most of the diseases are age-related and present a tremendous burden on the health care system.

Researchers have targeted diseases of the immune system (including autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, lupus and multiple sclerosis), infectious diseases, cancer and neurodegenerative diseases, among them Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.

Intensive research is also being directed towards the consequences of injury and trauma, where the focus is on developing treatment to prevent cell death (such as that which occurs after strokes and heart attacks), and for enhancement of tissue repair processes after traumatic injuries.
