Assaf Harofeh is more than a medical facility where patients regain their health;
it is an educational center.

Medical Students

Affiliated with the Tel Aviv University Sackler School of Medicine, Assaf Harofeh is a teaching and training facility on the intern, resident and post-graduate levels and in all specialities of modern medicine. Furthermore, it is part of the American Program in which students acquire credits which are applicable in the U.S.

The School of Nursing, the largest in Israel, was one of the first to be established here. Affiliated with the Hebrew University's Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem, the School's more than 400 students enroll in the 4 year academic course leading to a B.A. Degree in Nursing.  A large number of post-graduate courses are given as well as special teaching classes for new immigrants to aid their absorption.

The school of Physiotherapy, the first of its kind to be established in Israel, is one of only two such schools in the country. In 1950, following a severe outbreak of polio, Assaf Harofeh became the national center for pediatric physiotherapy and post-polio rehabilitation. The School, associated with Tel Aviv University, offers a 4 year course leading to B.A Degree in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Science.

New Immigrants Up-Date Skills

AHMC is located in one of the fastest growing regions of Israel where more than 60,000 newcomers have chosen to make their homes. Thus, it sees that the hospital's responsibilities are to provide more than simply health care, but also to facilitate employment opportunities for the 11,000 new immigrant doctors and other health care professionals who have arrived in the past ten years and need re-training in order to attain the high standards of western medicine practiced here.  AHMC has contributed to this goal by initiating many teaching and training programs whereby some of these doctors have learned to up-date their skills while others have opted for re-training in other medical-related fields. Hundreds of new immigrants have already successfully completed these programs.

 Assaf Harofeh ... is the Future

Nowadays Assaf Harofeh's activities have become more complex and diverse than those of twenty, ten or even five years ago. During the transformation process from a barracks-style hospital to today's up-to-date medical center, it would have been impossible to foresee how extensive its social and medical obligations would become.

The responsibility of having to cope with the burden of providing expert health services whose costs are constantly increasing, while acting as an academic teaching facility, geriatric nursing hospital and immigrant re-training center is the challenge now facing Assaf Harofeh. New facilities and equipment, advanced techniques, new procedures, new ways to maintain and prolong the quality of life are constantly being implemented, and this must continue unabated.

In the past several years, many new buildings have been inaugurated to create the new Assaf Harofeh Medical Center. If AHMC is to meet the challenges of the next century with confidence, much still remains to be done. It is a tribute to the devotion and generosity of the friends of Assaf Harofeh around the world, to the Israeli Government, and to the skills and dedication of the medical personnel who have earned Assaf Harofeh its widely respected reputation.
